Assistant Engineer, Permanent Way Project R150 POW


Job Purpose

The Assistant Engineer is to report to the Permanent Way Projects Engineering Maintenance Manager (EMM) and shall carry out duties and assignments delegated to him/her, ensuring that work is well executed in terms of safety and quality so as to support SMRT in providing safe and reliable train service to our commuters.  He/She shall be responsible for the switching of traction power and power related equipment so as to ensure a safe and reliable railway system.


The duties and responsibilities of an Assistant Engineer are as listed below. Note that the list is not comprehensive and related duties and responsibilities may be assigned from time to time and shall include but not limited to the following:


  • Require to work day or night shift including weekends as assigned based on roster planned one month in advance, subjected to last minute changes.
  • Perform power isolation and switching, must be full time in attendance during shift in event of emergency train movement that require switching.
  • Review Contractor's Method Statement, Risk Analysis on power safety -power segregation and protection. Review site electrical safety implementation.
  • Ensure Contractor complies with the LTA/SMRT modification procedure, electrical work/projects in SMRT premises, SMRT safety rules procedures and practices.
  • Operate running rail touch voltage protection device before start/end of every work shift.
  • Conduct quality checks on accessories and material provided by contractor.
  • Witness and ensure that installation of Load Breaker Switch (LBS) and third rail cut back's jumper cables and cable terminals installation works are properly and safely carried out by Contractor.
  • Carry out joint survey with Contractor prior to actual commencement of replacement work, to ascertain condition and damages to trackside equipment. Any damaged equipment or equipment not fulfilling satisfactory test requirements, the Assistant Engineer shall arrange to replace them before commencement of resleepering.
  • Witness and ensure that power trackside equipment (+VE / -VE Cables, Sensing Cables, Jumper Cables, Cross-Bonding cables, YBN Terminal, Cable Terminal and etc.) are not damaged in the process of removal and reinstatements by Contractor.
  • Witness that Testing & Commissioning of Power Trackside Equipment is carried out in accordance to Specifications and Checklist.
  • Assist EMM to conduct incident investigation, gathering of evidence and compilation of incident report.
  • Prepare and submit daily work report.

Qualifications & Work Experience

  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering with relevant work experience.
  • Relevant experience in operation and maintenance of any related system such as HV switchgear, 750V DC system, 415V AC system, 110V DC system, UPS and Battery charger will be an added advantage.
  • Able to lead, manage and guide large work groups.
  • Able to work independently, communicate effectively and be a good team player.
  • Good supervisory skill, decision making and able to organize and plan work.
  • Highly motivated individual with a positive attitude.


  • Proficient in using tools and equipment.
