Senior/Engineer, Condition Monitoring


Job Purpose

The Senior/Engineer, Condition Monitoring will develop maintenance decision-making tools for improving trains reliability and maintenance efficiency. The candidate will instrument varied Railway Assets with Condition Monitoring systems (e.g., IOT) for Data Acquisition and Transfer of Big-data. The candidate will also apply Engineering Fundamentals and Data Analytics technique to develop Asset Condition Assessment model for each Railway asset. This position will work closely with the Engineering and Maintenance Divisions of SMRT.


The duties and responsibilities for Senior/Engineer, Condition Monitoring are as listed below. Note that the list is not comprehensive and related duties and responsibilities may be assigned from time to time.

  • Understand key business processes and challenges of preventive, corrective, condition based and predictive maintenance of railway assets.
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Maintenance Stakeholders to understand and document their business needs for ongoing scaled deliverables and presentations to facilitate decision-making and forward planning. 
  • Understand the varied failure modes of the Railway Asset to identify key proxies to monitor for any given asset. 
  • Instrument Railway Assets with Condition Monitoring IOT/ Sensors to acquire the data for the identified proxy.
  • Manage and structure data collection and transfer for optimum efficiency
  • Create Visualizations to explore and understand the data.
  • Develop Asset Condition Assessment models with the available existing and new proxy data using Engineering knowledge and Data Analytics techniques.
  • Test and Validate the developed models and hypothesis in the field.
  • Program automated appication of validated models to generate regular reports.
  • Develop customized software GUI Tools and visualisations to suit the needs of Engineering and Maintenance teams for field applications.

Qualifications & Work Experience

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Mathematics, or Statistics
  • 2 years experience as an Engineer or Data Analyst, or in a similar role
  • Experienced in programming in at-least one programing language, Matlab is preferred. 
  • Basic knowledge of electrical circuits and fundamentals is required for instrumentation works.


Technical skills include:

  • Proficient in programming language and have rapid prototyping skills such as Matlab, Python, MS SQL, R, MS Excel, VBA, etc.
  • Knowledge of basic engineering fundamentals
  • Knowledge of basic statistical principles and practical applications
  • Knowledge of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence Models
  • Knowledge of data warehousing and architecting concepts
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, clean, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to understand and explain complex data and effective interactions with the stakeholders
